AI wrote my website...but not how you think
If you read last week’s email, you know that we’re in the middle of playing “Is it AI?”, where you guess if I used AI to write my refreshed website copy. Catch up here, if you don’t know what I’m talking about.
After reviewing my website, you all were about split. 60% thought it was AI-generated, 40% guessed it was human-written.
🥁 DRUM ROLL….
I totally used AI. Here’s why:
While each one of these emails is 100% Erica-written (and AI proofread before sending), writing my own website copy puts me into a tizzy. It feels like there’s so much pressure to get it right, I fall victim to being “paralyzed by perfection”
If I were to invest money on my website, it would be to pay someone for design work, not copywriting work (and I did pay someone for design work - thanks Lou!)
With some effort, I thought I could work ChatGPT to give me something “good enough”, and “good enough” was good enough for me in this situation
BUT HERE’S THE THING…
ONE, I didn’t just ask ChatGPT to “write website copy for my accounting firm website” and TWO, my ChatGPT is very well trained on my tone and writing style (from a year+ of proofreading my newsletters).
Here’s how it went. I opened a new project in ChatGPT and started with this prompt:
It then spit out a whole bunch of stuff for me to consider and steps to take. You can read that actual Chat here.
I then created new Chats within that project working through all the steps that the first Chat gave me:
Clarifying my target market
Updating positioning and messaging
Reviewing pricing & services
Only after completing all those steps (which honestly took hours of effort) AND feeding it about 8 testimonials of direct quotes from my current/past clients, did my ChatGPT have all the information it needed for me to feed it the prompts to finally help me write the copy.
For the homepage alone, I had the Chat ask me no fewer than 17 questions, based on a wireframe format I was targeting, that I answered so it could write out the copy.
Again, this took me hours to work through.
Is it perfect?
No.
Could a human copywriter have done better?
No doubt.
Was it in my very cheap budget?
Yes, ma’am.
Am I happy with the results?
Totally.
I copy and pasted (rewording here and there) everything into a Google Doc and sent it off to my designer to make magic happen.
Majorly refreshing my website is NOT something I want to be doing often. But I’m happy I did it. I’m happy it’s done. And I’m happy with the results.
EricaGoode.com if you want to read through it again now knowing all this.
Hope this helps,
Erica
