I’m at a local networking event all day today (I wrote this yesterday). After years of focusing on national and virtual reach for finding new clients, I now have a growing itch to focus locally for lead generation. (I try not to ignore these weird gut-feelings. They usually lead somewhere interesting.)
Every time I prep for potential client networking, I ask myself two questions:
#1 - Who do I hope to get a follow up conversation with?
and
#2 - How will I introduce myself?
Once I hone in on #1, the answer to #2 becomes easier.
There’s a lot of noise and pressure in the entrepreneurial space to get your “elevator pitch” right. As in, can you explain what you do in the amount of time an elevator ride takes?
Marketing people love to help you formulate the perfect sentence for this. It usually follows this formula: “I help _____ [insert verb] ______.”
Like:
“I help construction companies increase their cash flow.”
“I help dentists get the IRS off their backs.”
“I help real estate agents know their numbers.”
Now that I’ve pointed it out you’ll notice it all over LinkedIn.
……may I speak freely? I personally don’t like these sentences. I think they confuse people in our line of work.
Why?
Because we have the gift of a highly recognizable profession! For the most part, you don’t have to explain what a CPA, bookkeeper, fractional CFO, tax preparer, etc is to someone who needs one. They’re just happy they met you.
So today, I’m not going to overthink it.
“Hi, I’m Erica Goode. I’m a CPA.”
…and let the conversation go from there.
Cheers!
Erica
